European Innovation Council (CEI) awarded Aveiro third place as an Innovative European City on the Rise. This recognition was awarded to Aveiro within the framework of the European Capital of Innovation Awards, known as Capital Awards, which took place within the scope of the Summit of the European Innovation Council 2022, on December 7th and 8th, in Brussels.

Aveiro competed for The European Rising Innovative City award (for cities between 50 and 250 thousand inhabitants), through the Aveiro Tech City initiative, a partnership with several partners, including CMA, University of Aveiro, Altice Labs, Instituto de Telecomunicações, among others.

The project living lab Aveiro Tech City is being developed in conjunction with the Aveiro municipality, an initiative under the coordination of Susana Sargento (IT and UA). Aveiro Tech City integrates more than 20 different activities, with particular emphasis on the work carried out in STEAM Education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics), Aveiro Tech City Living Lab, or in supporting the digital transformation of the municipality.

This European Union award, supported by the European Innovation Council under the Horizon Europe programme, recognizes the role that cities play in shaping the local innovation ecosystem and promoting innovation, identifying cities that connect the public, academia, companies, and the public sector to successfully translate the results into improved societal well-being while driving innovation.
