A team of researchers from the Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT) and the University of Aveiro (UA) was distinguished with an important scientific award, the Best Paper Award from the Journal of Lightwave Technology, one of the most reputable scientific journals of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers).

Congratulations to Fernando Guiomar (IT-UA), Marco Fernandes (former IT researcher/Meta), Leonardo Nascimento (IT-UA), Paulo Monteiro (IT-UA), and Vera Rodrigues, a researcher at CESAM, for the results published within the scope of the OptWire (see more), a project financed by FCT currently in its final phase. This recognition is particularly significant as it stands among the most prestigious international awards in the field of optical communications.

The award-winning study focuses on research into wireless optical communication systems capable of supporting multi-Terabit/s transmissions, with potential applications in space communications (satellite-to-satellite, satellite-to-Earth, and interplanetary) and the future generation of 6G mobile communications. To achieve this feat, the team at the IT developed new advanced signal processing and transmission techniques, allowing unprecedented transmission speeds to be achieved. In addition, the CESAM researcher contributed with a detailed analysis of meteorological data, particularly concerning the impact of atmospheric turbulence on the performance of the communication system. Together, this groundbreaking work effectively validated the potential of wireless optical communications to revolutionize future telecommunications networks.

This award is given annually by the Journal’s Steering and Coordinating Committee to the top-cited original papers published in the Journal two to three years prior to the award. As such, the award given in 2024 takes into account all original papers published in the Journal of Lightwave Technology in 2022. A variety of citation metrics and databases are used by the Committee to determine the winner.

The official awards ceremony will take place in early April, in the context of the OFC conference.

Note that Fernando Guiomar also won, two times in a row, the JLT Outstanding Reviewer Award (read it here).
