Project: Distributed Measurement System with Traffic Engineering Support

Acronym: DMeSTrES
Main Objective:
The main objective of this project is to develop a software prototype of a traffic engineering tool, integrating traffic measurements and traffic analysis. The traffic measurement platform will be based on a novel peer-to-peer (P2P) architecture recently proposed by the research team in [Sal05a]. This work will rely on previous experience of the research team in the development of traffic measurement tools (see, for example, http://www.av.it.pt/jowamp). Traffic analysis will be performed in the peer elements of the measurement platform in a distributed way. Again, this work will rely on previous experience of the research team in the areas of traffic modelling and statistical characterization. Such a distributed architecture brings the benefit of allowing easy and flexible integration of new traffic analysis modules. The tool is expected to attract attention of the research community working in this area.
One of the goals of traffic measurements is to support timely and efficient traffic engineering tasks, which requires sophisticated traffic analysis methodologies. As referred above, the research team has been much involved in this field. However, one of the main weaknesses in this field is the lack of software applications that integrate the developed methodologies in a way that is easy to use by non-specialists. This project will try to overcome this problem.
