Abstract
Mechanical scanning based on Transmit-array (TAs) antennas provide a good trade-off between cost, size, and efficiency. Recently, a regained interest on the classical Risley prism scanning approach, initially developed for optics using
dielectric prisms, emerged in the microwave domain. The
mechanical scanning relies on independent axial rotation of two
two flat surfaces. The TAs are usually associated with a thin metasurface composed by a tailored distribution of patch-based unit cells. This work explores an alternative design using full-dielectric TAs. The main motivation is to further reduce the antenna cost. In this work, we use Fuse Deposition Modelling (FDM) to build a prototype operating at Ka band capable of delivering a 25 dBi of gain and scanning between [-47º,47º] in zenith and 360º in azimuth. As far as the authors are aware, there is no such design reported in the literature as well as the assessment of its performance compared with the more conventional patch-based implementation – which we also address in this work using full-wave simulations.
