Bio

Full Professor (2006) from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DEEC) of Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Faculty of Engineering from the University of Lisbon. Obtained the PhD degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from IST in 1990. Past vice-president of DEEC/IST (2003-04), past member of the Board of Directors of Instituto de Telecomunicações (2009-2024), coordinator of its Wireless Technologies thematic line, and head of the Antennas and Propagation Group. He is Life Senior Member of the IEEE, and Correspondent Member of the Lisbon Academy os Sciences. Teaching chairs were in the fields of Antennas, Microwaves, Radiowave Propagation, and Satellite Systems. He was/is a supervisor or co-supervisor of 12 PhD Theses, and nearly 50 MSc students.

His research work spans millimeter-wave antennas for broadband communication systems, antennas for satellite systems, metamaterials, antennas for IoT based on RFID and UWB technology, antennas for body-area applications, including medical applications, medical microwave imaging, and radiowave propagation in complex environments. He is the co-inventor of 8 patents, one of them protected worldwide and commercialized. He authored or co-authored more than 400 peer-reviewed scientific publications, including 3 book chapters, 100 papers in international Journals, mostly Q1, and 280+ Conference papers. He has 6000+ citations and an h-index of 44 in Google Scholar. He has been involved in nearly 50 National and International R&D Projects, funded by the Portuguese Science Foundation, EU, and the European Space Agency, several of these as PI, reaching in some cases TRL 9 products.

Silva, The ANACOM-URSI Portugal research prize - 2019 edition, The ANACOM-URSI Portugal research prize was awarded at the 2019 edition for the work "ISTSat-1 - The First Portuguese University CubeSat". It is a work of excellent scientific quality and rigour, clarity and transversality. The work was produced by the ISTnanosat team, of the Instituto Superior Técnico, comprising João Paulo Monteiro, Alexandre Silva, Carlos Fernandes and Rui M. Rocha of IST/IT, Fabian Naf, Rúben Afonso, Gonçalo Tavares, Moisés Piedade, of IST / INESC-ID and Nuno Ramos, Tomás Almeida, João Pinto, Diogo Neves, Renato Encarnação, José Freitas, of IST. The team developed a CubeSat to perform a space mission to demonstrate ADS-B technology for tracking aircraft in remote regions of the planet. For this mission, carried out since 2017 under ESA's "Fly Your Satellite!" programme, the team chose to develop almost all subsystems from scratch through various master’s theses. Having already designed, built and integrated all the ISTSat-1 subsystems, as well as having gone through several test campaigns, the team is now aiming for the final acceptance tests and the preparation for the launch in 2020. The prize sponsored by ANACOM, in the amount of four thousand euros, was awarded at the end of the 13th Congress of the Portuguese Committee of URSI by the Vice-Chairman of ANACOM, João Miguel Coelho, and by the Chairman of the Portuguese Committee of URSI, Luísa Mendes., 01-12-2019
