Biocellulose and Derivatives as Substrates and
Dielectrics for Organic Field-Effect Transistors

Bacterial cellulose (BC), also called Biocellulose, and BC
derivatives are being investigated as novel materials for organic
electronics. These are biodegradable, biocompatible and flexible
materials, which could be relevant for specific applications, such
as bio-devices.
These materials were used as substrates and dielectrics in Organic
Field-Effect Transistors, OFETs. Their use as substrates was
combined with solution processable dielectrics, such as
polymethylmethacrylate and BC composites and derivatives. Spin
coated films of poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-alt-bithiophene) and
thermally evaporated pentacene were used as semiconducting
materials. In this communication, we report on devices
characteristics, aiming to characterize BC materials and evaluate
their possible applications.
