Abstract
This paper assesses the transmission performance of Long Term Evolution (LTE) signals, complying with release 8, through long-reach fiber-to-the-home (LR-FTTH) networks. The effect on system performance of critical parameters such as the modulation index of the Mach-Zehnder modulator and the electrical receiver bandwidth is analyzed and optimized, trough simulation, considering different digital modulation formats as well as different LTE channel bandwidths. A fiber transmission reach up to 150 km is demonstrated for LTE signals with QPSK and 16QAM constellations, with 1 dB and 3 dB of optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) penalty, respectively, whereas LTE signals with a 64QAM constellation present an OSNR penalty of 5.6dB after transmission over 80 km of fiber.
