The International Standardization Committee ISO/IEC JTC1 SC29 WG1, better known as the Joint
Photographic Experts Group (JPEG), has a long tradition in the creation of image coding standards. More
than 27 years after the release of the first JPEG standard ISO/IEC 10918, the JPEG format stands as a synonym
for digital pictures. JPEG is a working group of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and, in many cases, its standards are jointly developed and published by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). JPEG is also cooperating with its sister working group Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG), especially in the area of common file formats.
