Abstract
This letter presents a flexible mobile fronthaul modem for the remote radio heads of the emerging cloud radio access network architectures. The use of the technique with highorder modulated signals presents a solution that increases the effective spectral efficiency of the digital radio over fiber signals transported in mobile fronthaul. In addition, by using uncooled reflective semiconductor optical amplifiers (RSOAs), the proposed modem turns into a low cost and, therefore, attractive solution.
Experimental results have shown an effective data rate of 1.6 Gb/s using three 64-QAM modulated subcarriers transmitted over a 21.4-km distance.
