Permanent magnet synchronous motors have been recently considered as an attractive alternative to the use of induction motors. On the other hand, the reliability of an electrical drive is always a very important goal, especially in critical applications. Due to these reasons, this work presents a simulation study of an electrical drive based on a permanent magnet synchronous motor with a special emphasis given to the analysis of single faults in the voltage source inverter. MATLAB/Simulink environment is used to simulate the drive system. Rotor field oriented control strategy is used to control the motor below base speed. Permanent magnet synchronous motor operation in both healthy and faulty conditions are studied based on the results of currents, electromagnetic torque and mechanical rotor speed. The average current Park’s Vector approach is applied to diagnose faults in the controlled power semiconductors of the voltage source inverter.
