Abstract
OBS and OPS network performance is mainly hampered by resource contention between bursts/packets directed to the same output port. Fibre Delay Line (FDL) buffers can be used to help resolve contention, reducing burst blocking probability. Tractable analytical models of OBS networks including FDLs would be of great assistance in designing optical buffered networks, and in assessing the performance gains due to FDL buffers. This paper extends an earlier analytical network model framework, to capture the effect of recirculating FDL buffers on network performance. Burst blocking performance results obtained with this network model are compared with equivalent results obtained by simulation, demonstrating the validity of the analytical model for nodes employing FDLs.
