Abstract
Cooperative Intelligent Transportation Systems (C- ITS) are revolutionizing traffic safety and operational efficiency, with road sensing technologies playing a vital role in providing real-time data on traffic conditions and hazards. This paper explores the integration of small, cost-effective road sensors into C-ITS scenarios to enhance highway safety and efficiency. The proposed solution utilizes roadside sensor boxes with LoRaWAN communications to detect impacts, monitor weather conditions, and perform traffic analysis. These sensor boxes, deployed along the guardrails of the highways, communicate with Road-Side Units (RSUs) that relay data and provide connectivity to passing vehicles. The architecture incorporates cloud-based processing for data analysis, processing, and storage. Experimental results from a laboratory setup indicate promising performance, with sub-second latency observed in event propagation from sensor detection to vehicle notification. This integration of wireless road sensors presents a scalable and efficient approach to improving road safety and efficiency in modern transportation systems.
