Abstract
Current Cooperative Intelligent Transportation Systems
(C-ITS) face limitations that can impact real-time vehicle
operation and the coordination of traffic maneuvers, including
communication latency, packet loss, limited computational
capacity, and heterogeneous network deployments. To address
these limitations, this paper presents a vehicle digital twin (DT)
system integrated into a 5G multi-access edge computing (MEC)
environment that supports the execution of latency-sensitive
complex traffic maneuvers, even when vehicles are connected
to different 5G networks. Physical vehicles remain synchronized
with their virtual counterparts at the edge, where agents predict
and identify potential collisions based on future trajectories
and communicate preventive feedback to the vehicles. A DT
monitoring interface was developed to visualize the vehicle’s
network connection status and the outcomes of the collision
detection results. The system was evaluated under different
deployment setups, demonstrating the feasibility of using DT and
MEC for predictive, low-latency vehicular applications.
