In this work, we design and implement a distributed 2×2 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) joint radar and communication (JRC) system employing a 5G-NR signal with millimeter-wave (mmWave) transmission. A centralized radio access network (C-RAN) is adopted with the signal generation and radar processing performed in a central unit and a low-cost photonic fronthaul distributes the radio frequency (RF) signals to the radio heads. The photonic fronthaul is based on intermediate-frequency-over-fiber (IFoF) using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transceivers in small-form-factor-package (SFP) and adapted for analog RF modulation. Using a 5G-NR FR2 signal with 100 MHz bandwidth and QPSK modulation, we demonstrate target detection with a precision of approximately 7 centimeters using joint coherent MIMO processing with adaptive pulse compression (APC). Additionally, downlink communication with an user equipment is verified with 3GPP compliant EVM.
