In this work, we demonstrate a real-time architecture for enabling the use of all-digital transmitters in mm-wave frequency bands. We propose the combination of delta-sigma modulation techniques and electro-optical upconversion stages to ease the stringent requirements in the design of RF front-ends. In our proof-of-concept demonstration, the real-time delta-sigma modulation technique is synthesised and prototyped into a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). Experimental results are reported in the range from 27 GHz up to 63 GHz and evaluated in terms of error-vector magnitude (EVM). The promising results demonstrate the scalability and flexibility of the proposed technique towards the design of highly-integrated and agile front-ends for next generation of communications.
