Abstract
This paper shows that shortest path routing may lead to an excessively large burst blocking probability in an OBS network. In some network scenarios, a significantly lower blocking probability can be achieved by routing the traffic so that network congestion is minimized. A novel heuristic routing algorithm is described and shown to outperform the shortest path routing algorithm in reducing network congestion.
