Abstract
Abstract — This paper presents an analysis and risk
mitigation study involving telecommunications equipment,
which are considered critical as a support for the
Portuguese electrical grid. Based on a condition and risk
evaluation, it was possible to create a maintenance
strategy to reduce the impact and the probability of failure
of the PDH, SDH, VHF, Microwave, Ethernet/IP and Fibre
Optics (FO) equipment. These equipment constitute EDP
Distribuição (EDPD) private telecommunications network.
The usage of a Condition Based Risk Maintenance
(CBRM) approach was crucial for this purpose and
provided the necessary tools to support that strategy. The
CBRM policy is often associated with maintenance of
energy equipment, but it will be shown in this work that it
can also be successfully applied in the
telecommunications area, specifically in the maintenance
of an industrial telecommunications network. The ultimate
goal was to present a maintenance strategy for EDPD, for
it to be implemented in its private telecommunications
network, and thus improve the management of the
network assets, reducing costs and maintaining reliability,
observing and improving company´s risk matrix.
