Abstract
In this paper we analyze the visibility of the graded index plastic optical fibers (GI-POFs) in access networks, especially in home area networks. The GI-POFs seem a very attractive alternative in home access networks in comparison to the “classic” single/multimode glass optical fibers because of their easy installation and low prices. Extensions of the classical baseband data is used to achieve the optical properties of the used fiber. Our experiments will be specified in terms of performance, maximum rates and any degradation that might appear in the system. Moreover, some available multimode passive component will be tested in order to understand their potential uses in the next generation optical home networks.
