The relevance of flexible add/drop architectures for Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexers (ROADMs) is recognized by their commercial availability and in a number of papers. However, most studies have assumed a transport network supporting highly dynamic wavelength services, which is not the case in real networks today or in the foreseeable future. This paper estimates the savings in operational expenditures enabled by the colorless and directionless add/drop properties in a more realistic multi-period planning with traffic churn scenario.
