Abstract
Several recent works debated about the correct definition of the Poynting vector in metamaterials. Here, we report a numerical study that demonstrates that the Poynting vector can be defined in a self-consistent and unambiguous manner in terms of the macroscopic effective parameters. Specifically, for the case of a composite material formed by an array of cylindrical-shaped dielectric inclusions embedded in a material with a plasmonic response, it is numerically shown that the spatially averaged microscopic Poynting vector can be accurately written in terms of the macroscopic electromagnetic fields and of a nonlocal dielectric function.
