Abstract
During last decade the number of electronic and sensitive loads connected to the mains increased considerably. These new loads are also sensitive to short duration voltage transients which can provoke their malfunction or damage, resulting in a high economic impact in industrial environment. The characterization and the monitoring of prejudicial voltage transients is an important issue to consider in order to carry out preventive actions like the usage of voltage transient filters and limiters. In this paper the authors make an exhaustive study of the new sensitive loads, namely in their power supplies, identifying the typically used topologies, design criteria and control techniques. As result of this analysis, voltage events not previously considered in power quality standards are defined as prejudicial to the sensitive loads. In addition a prototype of a Power Quality Monitor is developed considering the detection of the defined events.
