Abstract
The objective of this paper is to evaluate the feasibility of using a commercial solver (WIPL-D MW based on the Method of Moments) to design and fully characterize a reconfigurable antenna with encapsulated MEMS switches. To validate the modeling, a compact reconfigurable stacked patch antenna for WLAN applications incorporating two packaged MEMS switches is proposed. The antenna operates at two distinct frequency bands, controlled by the operating state of two RF MEMS switches. When both switches are OFF the antenna operates at the higher operating frequency (5 GHz band for 802.11a) and when both are ON, the antenna operation toggles to the lower frequency band (2.4 GHz band for 802.11g).
