A new ultra-wideband spiral antenna is developed for integration into compact multi-mode multi-antenna personal terminals, that is able to host a multitude of band standards like DAB, GSM1800, UMTS, HIPERLAN II. An 8 cm diameter single-arm printed spiral antenna, with reduced ground plane, and 1.6 mm thickness is presented, which
shows an excellent performance between 1.4 and 5.6 GHz. Relevant aspects related to system requirements in terms of bandwidth, as well as size and integration constrains dictated by personal communication terminals are considered.
