Acronym: e-Photon ONe + |
Main Objective: Specific Research goals Although it is understood that funding research is not a primary goal of a NoE, joint research projects (JPs), aiming at integration by means of focused research, were activated within e-Photon/ONe. Reflecting new research trends five new JPs have been defined for the first 18 months of e- Photon/ONe+. Within JPs different partners work together and pursue common goals in a well coordinated and focused research activity. These projects serve as an important catalyst toward integration inside the NoE. The new JPs of e-Photon/ONe+ will focus on: - JP-G: “Optical networking for grids and e-science” - JP-B: “Optical burst switching” - JP-S: “Electro/optic switching architectures” - JP-E: “Mitigation of optical transmission impairments by electronic means” - JP-T: “Dynamic and distributed optical monitoring and equalization” New JPs could later be added, according to proposals coming from the VDs. Specific integration goals Virtual Departments are the key instrument inside the NoE to foster integration. The main goals of VDs are the following. - To create consensus on key research issues to be investigated in optical networking and focus the partners’ research efforts on such issues - To define and foster the creation of specific joint research activities among partners - To foster the publication of joint research results by the partners - To stimulate the regular, short term exchanges of people between partners, aiming at the involvement of at least one person from every partner in such a scheme - To stimulate the long term exchanges of young researchers between partners, aiming at the involvement of at least one young researcher from every partner - To stimulate the joint supervision of PhD students - To stimulate the integration and sharing of lab infrastructures and resources Specific dissemination goals - To organize Summer and Winter technical schools - To organize workshops where young researchers can present their research work, mainly co-located with Summer and Winter schools - To support the ONDM conference (IFIP Working Conference on Optical Network Design and Modelling), with a significant involvement in its organization, and to maintain strong links with other international conferences on optical networking and communications - To establish links with other projects in the field, and with a number of industry associations or professional organizations, at a national level, at a EU level (IST and non IST, other NoEs etc), and at an international level - To provide technical and research support to European manufacturers, vendors and operators - To stimulate spin-offs from academic research. |
