PROJECT: Synergizing Sensor Networks and Artificial Intelligence in Monitoring Adhesive
ACRONYM: S2NAI_SHM
MAIN OBJECTIVE: Adhesive joints play a pivotal role across diverse industries such as aerospace, automotive, naval and construction, offering advantages such as weight reduction and stress distribution. However, ensuring their quality and long-term performance presents significant challenges, requiring innovative solutions.
The main objective of this project is to develop advanced solutions to meet the high demand for reliable Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of bonded joints in those industrial and engineering applications. To achieve this objective, the research team propose to develop and implement innovative hybrid strategies that synergize the strengths of digital signal processing (DSP), artificial intelligence (AI), and feature-based data fusion methods, using datasets from ultrasonic guided wave (UGW)–based SHM inspections to improve the accuracy of damage characterization in bonded joints.
Various excitation approaches and signal processing techniques will be adopted for the extraction of relevant fetures for quantitative damage imaging, data fusion, and AI models. It is expected that this work will provide hybrid SHM strategies incorporating advanced algorithms and data-driven methods for UGW technology to inspect the quality of bonded joints in terms of damage detection, localization, and characterization. It is also expected that sufficient experimental validation will be conducted to build an initial prototype incorporating network of PZTs sensors and analysing received data through synergizing DSP, feature-based data fusion methods, and AI. The outcome of the project will provide solutions to the challenges associated with implementing SHM systems for use in industry.
