Project: FIbre-WIreless Access: Future Integrated Access Architecture Based on Optical and Broadband Wireless Technologies

Acronym: FI-WI
Main Objective:
The main objective of the project is to build an access and metropolitan network architecture that integrates upcoming optical and broadband wireless technologies, thereby enjoying the complementary characteristics of these technologies, so that the user will be able to access diverse communication services in a transparent manner and with a high degree of ubiquity, being able to move among different networks, while maintaining a high resource utilization efficiency. Key issues in this context are future end user needs, integrated QoS support and optimized service provisioning. The project will unveil research opportunities, issue recommendations and propose novel mechanisms associated with the convergence within this heterogeneous access scenario and will thus serve as a basis for long-term research projects in this direction.
