Summary: A research position for one Research Grant (“Bolsa de Investigação“) is open at Instituto de Telecomunicações, in the scope of the Project project Route 25 - PRT – Route 25: Agenda for Autonomous, Intelligent, Interoperable and Inclusive Mobility. This project is funded by the European Union / Next Generation EU, through Programa de Recuperação e Resiliência (PRR) [Project Route 25 with Nr. C645463824-00000063]. This work is within the scope of Work Package 2: "Digital Experience & Adaptive Connectivity for Cooperative Mobility" and Work Package 7: "Communication, Dissemination and Exploitation". |

Admission Requirements: Research grants are intended: - for students enrolled in a degree-conferring course to carry out R&D activities with the aim to consolidate their scientific training through the development of research work leading to the attainment of the respective academic degree or completion of the course (integrated or not in R&D projects). - for students enrolled in courses that do not confer an academic degree but which are integrated in an educational project of a higher education institution and are developed in association or cooperation with one or several R&D units. In what concerns the admission requirements for this research grant in particular: - Candidates must be enrolled in a master's, an integrated master's program in Electrical and computer engineering, computer systems, or similar, or a non-degree academic program. - The candidates should have good understanding of computer systems; background in networking advantageous, specifically in cellular networks and 5G; methodic, able to autonomously carry out experiments; motivated for the project; good English speaking and writing skills; ability to integrate in a multicultural work environment. |
Work Objectives: Main Objective: Assess energy consumption of an open source 5G gNodeB Workplan: 1. Get to know IT Porto's 5G non-public network, and state-of-the-art on energy consumption of the split RAN gNodeB and previous work in the group 2. Establish interoperability between a commercial 5G user equipment and an open-source 5G network 3. Analyze the contribution of a distributed/centralized unit’s memory energy consumption to total energy consumption for different number of users 4. Study the correlation between performance monitoring counters (PMCs) and energy consumption of a 5G distributed/centralized unit’s memory for different number of users 5. Develop an energy model of a 5G distributed/centralized unit’s memory 6. Write documentation and support article writing |
Applicable legislation: A fellowship will be celebrated according to “Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação”, Law no. 40/2004, dated on 18th of August (Status of Scientific Research Fellow - https://dre.pt/dre/legislacao-consolidada/lei/2004-58216179), in its actual redaction, by Fellowship Regulation of Fundação para Ciência e Tecnologia (https://files.dre.pt/2s/2019/12/241000000/0009100105.pdf), according to Reg. 950/2019, dated on 16th of December, and also by “Regulation of Instituto de Telecomunicações’ fellowships”. |
Place of work: The work will be developed at the premises of Instituto de Telecomunicações – Porto, under the supervision of Professor Ana Aguiar. |
Duration: 6 months, with the possibility of renewal (according to the regulations defined by FCT). Start date: March 1st, 2025 or soon thereafter. |
Monthly salary: 990,98 € according to the table of grant amounts awarded directly by FCT for positions held in Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM_atualizacao-2024.pdf). The payment will be made by bank transfer. |
Selection criteria:
Candidates may be interviewed for clarification of any aspect related to the above criteria Each criteria, and the final classification F will be evaluated in a scale (0-20). The candidates will be ordered according to: F = C1 x 70% + C2 x 30% In case of a tie, the tied candidates will be ordered according to C1, then C2... The Jury has the right to not admit any of the candidates that applied for this position whenever they consider that no candidate meets the minimum requirements for the position. |

Communication of the results: Results will be published at the Instituto de Telecomunicações, Lisboa. The selected candidate will be notified by email. After the notification of the results, candidates have 10 working days if they wish to contest the decision. |
