Research Grant (“Bolsa de Investigação” ) - BI/ Nº 001/2022
Funding Reference Number:
A research position for one Research Grant (“Bolsa de Investigação”) is open at Instituto de Telecomunicações, in the scope of project Bin-NET: PiM-Enabled Binary Neural Network Inferencing at the Edge with Ref. EXPL/EEI-HAC/1511/2021. This project is funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia.
Scientific Area:
Information and Data Sciences
Multimedia Signal Processing – Co
Admission Requirements:
Research grants are intended:
- for students enrolled in a degree-conferring course to carry out R&D activities with the aim to consolidate their scientific training through the development of research work leading to the attainment of the respective academic degree or completion of the course (integrated or not in R&D projects).
- for students enrolled in courses that do not confer an academic degree but which are integrated in an educational project of a higher education institution and are developed in association or cooperation with one or several R&D units.

In what concerns the admission requirements for this research grant in particular: candidates must hold a Master’s Degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, and be enrolled in courses (that confer or not an academic degree but) that are integrated in an educational project of a higher education institution in the area of Electrical and Computer Engineering (or similar).
Work Objectives:
Bin-NET will focus the research to a well-known and widely used class of neural networks: Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and their binary variants, the Binary Neural Networks (BNNs). The work objectives consist of the development of a new substrate for the implementation of BNNs using processing-in-memory technologies, and is distributed across six tasks:
T1. Define the most suitable development platform to implement and validate operations in memory.
T2. Define a set of instructions / operations necessary for executing BNNs in-memory
T3. Implement in-memory support for data shuffling and enable the processing of the entire BNN in-memory.
T4. Evaluate and compare the performance of BNNs running in-memory to that of CNNs.
T5. Develop a compilation framework that facilitates the process of offloading a BNN (or an existing quantized CNN) to memory.
T6. Writing of scientific articles.
Applicable legislation:
A fellowship will be celebrated according to the regulations defined by FCT, “Regulation of Instituto de Telecomunicações’ fellowships” and “Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação”, according to Law no. 123/2019, dated August 28 (Status of Scientific Research Fellow), in its actual redaction, and also by Fundação para Ciência e Tecnologia, I.P. Fellowship Regulation of Fundação para Ciência e Tecnologia. For direct access to the FCT RBI go to the following link (Reg. 950/2019, published in the DR of 16 December).
Place of work:
The work will be developed at the premises of Instituto de Telecomunicações at Coimbra, under the supervision of Prof. Gabriel Falcão Paiva Fernandes.
12 months, with the possibility of renewal. Start date: February 15st, 2021 or soon thereafter.
Monthly salary:
1.104,64€ according to the table of grant amounts awarded directly by FCT for positions held in Portugal ( The payment will be made by bank transfer.
Selection criteria:
  • C1 (40%)
    Curriculum Vitae
  • C2 (50%)
Suitability of the candidate's profile for the project based on relevant work experience in the context of the tasks described in the Work Objectives
  • C3 (10%)
Level of oral and written English

Candidates may be interviewed for clarification of any aspect related to the above criteria
Each criteria, and the final classification F will be evaluated in a scale (0-20). The candidates will be ordered according to:
F = C1 x 40% + C2 x 50% + C3 x 10%
In case of a tie, the tied candidates will be ordered according to C1, then C2...
