Research grants are intended:
- for students enrolled in a degree-conferring course to carry out R&D activities with the aim to consolidate their scientific training through the development of research work leading to the attainment of the respective academic degree or completion of the course (integrated or not in R&D projects).
- for students enrolled in courses that do not confer an academic degree but which are integrated in an educational project of a higher education institution and are developed in association or cooperation with one or several R&D units.

In what concerns the admission requirements for this research grant in particular: candidates must possess a Bachelor degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering or Applied Physics or Physics Engineering, or equivalent course, with a grade point average not inferior to 14 out of 20. Work Objectives:
Work Objectives: Symmetries and broken symmetries play important roles in physics. In particular, symmetries (such as rotational, reflection, and time-reversal symmetries) at the microscopic scale dictate the bulk response of materials and define the way electromagnetic waves propagate in the materials. Crucially, the breaking of these symmetries can lead to far richer physics. Engineered complex media (such as metamaterials) can open new routes in terms of breaking symmetries and controlling wave propagation, with a deep impact on a broad range of technologies, including wireless communications, biomedical sciences, laser technologies, energy harvesting, and computing. The applicant will take part in the SymBreak project (https://www.it.pt/Projects/Index/4660). The objective of the work is to investigate novel engineered systems with broken symmetries that may allow an unprecedented control of light. In particular, it will be investigated the wave propagation is systems based on drift-current biased high-mobility semiconductors (such as InSb) and/or graphene with broken time-reversal symmetry.
Applicable legislation:
A fellowship will be celebrated according to the regulations defined by FCT, “Regulation of Instituto de Telecomunicações’ fellowships” and “Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação”, according to Law no. 123/2019, dated August 28 (Status of Scientific Research Fellow), in its actual redaction, and also by Fundação para Ciência e Tecnologia, I.P. Fellowship Regulation of Fundação para Ciência e Tecnologia. Place of work:
The work will be developed at the premises of Instituto de Telecomunicações at Coimbra, under the supervision of the Dr. Tiago A. Morgado, Dr. David E. Fernandes e Dr. Sylvain Lannebère.
Duration:
6 months, with the possibility of renewal. Start date: 1 of January 2022 or soon thereafter.
Monthly salary:
835,98€ according to the table of grant amounts awarded directly by FCT for positions held in Portugal (www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores ). The payment will be made by bank transfer.
