Title:
MEO-Satellite Measurement Campaign Set-up - BIL Nº2020/00107
Funding Reference Number:
BIL Nº2020/00107
Summary:
A research position for 1 (one) Research Grant (“Bolsa de Investigação de Licenciado“) is open at Instituto de Telecomunicações. Communications using MEO and LEO satellites in the Ka band and above have seen remarkable growth in recent years. However, the atmosphere can introduce serious impairments to the signal propagation. These impairments are well characterized for geostationary satellites, however there are no models or experimental data suitable for links to MEO and LEO orbits. The work proposed here is part of a pioneering effort to fill this gap within the scope of an ESA-Artes project.
Scientific Area:
Wireless Communications
Group:
Radio Systems – Av
Admission Requirements:
The candidate must have a BSc and be enrolled in an MSc course. Fundamental knowledge of propagation in the atmosphere in the Ka band; Satellite communications: link budgets, orbits, etc. Basic knowledge of aperture antennas: reflectors, horns. Digital signal processing skills Skills in Matlab and programming in C / C ++ Good knowledge of the Linux operating system.
Work Objectives:
As part of the MEKAP project, which aims to conduct a propagation measurement campaign in the Ka band of satellites in MEO orbit and proceed with the modeling of the channel, a receiver will be installed to monitor the constellation O3b beacons and collect data. The work to be carried out consists of: Monitoring the installation and operation of the station where it is important to highlight, at least: calibration of the tracking system, verification of the correct execution of the scheduled observation operations and integrity of the collected data and proceed with the necessary software rectifications. Performance evaluation of the signal detection algorithms and respective optimization if necessary. Evaluation of the overall performance of the receiver and the characteristics of the beacons of each of the satellites to be observed. Develop procedures for automatic management of data files: integrity checking and backup copies. Software development to perform the pre-analysis of the data and constitution of a database to perform the modeling of the channel.
Applicable legislation:
A fellowship will be celebrated according to the regulations defined by FCT, “Regulation of Instituto de Telecomunicações’ fellowships” and ” Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação”, according to Law no. 40/2004, dated August 18 (Status of Scientific Research Fellow), in its actual redaction, and also by Fundação para Ciência e Tecnologia, I.P. Fellowship Regulation of Fundação para Ciência e Tecnologia, I.P. https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/docs/RegulamentoBolsasFCT2019.pdf
Place of work:
The work will be developed at the premises of Instituto de Telecomunicações at University of Aveiro, under the supervision of Prof. Armando Rocha.
Duration:
4 months with the possibility of renewal. Start date: October 2020 or soon thereafter.
Monthly salary:
798.00€ according to the table of grant amounts awarded directly by FCT for positions held in Portugal (www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores). The payment will be made by bank transfer.
Selection criteria:
  • C1 (60%)
    Curricular Evaluation
  • C2 (40%)
    Interview

Each criteria, and the final classification F will be evaluated in a scale (0-20). The candidates will be ordered according to:
F = C1 x 60% + C2 x 40%
In case of a tie, the tied candidates will be ordered according to C1, then C2...
The Jury has the right to not admit any of the candidates that applied for this position whenever they consider that no candidate meets the minimum requirements for the position.
Jury:
  • Prof. Armando Carlos Domingues da Rocha, Universidade de Aveiro (President of the jury)
  • Prof. Susana de Jesus Mota, Universidade de Aveiro
  • Prof. Joao Nuno Pimentel da Silva Matos, Universidade de Aveiro
Communication of the results:
Results will be published at the Instituto de Telecomunicações, in Aveiro. The selected candidate will be notified by email.
Required Documents:
Motivation letter explaining the interest in the position; Detailed Curriculum Vitae with transcripts; Degree certificate(s). Apply online clicking on the “Apply Now” button in this form.
After the notification of the results, candidates have 10 working days if they wish to contest the decision.
