Creating and sharing knowledge for telecommunications

Research Position:

Title: Research Grant - BIL/Nº57 - 27/08/2019 - Designing Generative Adversarial Frameworks for Interpretable Biometric Recognition
Funding Reference Number: BIL/Nº57 - 27/08/2019 - Designing Generative Adversarial Frameworks for Interpretable Biometric Recognition
Summary: A research position for one Research Grant (“Bolsa de Investigação Licenciado“) is opened at Instituto de Telecomunicações, in the scope of the Interns Project Reference UID/EEA/50008/2019, funded by the applicable financial framework (FCT/MCTES). The work for this position is in the area of biometric recognition systems
Scientific Area: Networks and Multimedia
Group: Pattern and Image Analysis – Cv
Admission Requirements: Bachelor of Science/Engineering degree in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering or related fields. Experience in scientific research in computer vision and pattern recognition domains, preferably with previous knowledge about biometric recognition systems. Also, solid skills in Python are also valuable
Work Objectives: This work aims at designing/developing one solution for interpretable biometric recognition, which will make easier the application of biometrics to forensics, by allowing to explain the reasons that sustain a match/non-match response. This way, the work lays at the intersection of two important scientific research topics: 1) biometric recognition; and 2) human-machine interaction. In particular, the work considers to use Generative Adversarial Frameworks (GANs) as the main framework for producing interpretable responses. As biometric source, we consider the periocular region, in order to obtain understandable text descriptions of: 1) the eyebrows (shape); 2) the eyelids (shape); 3) the iris (color) and 4) the skin (color and texture). It is expected that the grantee develops one solution for interpretable biometric recognition. Also, the solution should be experimentally validated with respect to the state-of-the-art, and a technical report/paper should be written, summarizing the main conclusions.
Applicable legislation: A fellowship will be celebrated according to the regulations defined by FCT, “Regulation of Instituto de Telecomunicações’ fellowships” and ” Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação”, according to Law no. 40/2004, dated August 18 (Status of Scientific Research Fellow), as amended and republished by Decree-Law No.202/2012 of August 27, and as amended by Decree-Law No.233/2012 of October 29 and by Law No.12/2013 of January 29, and Decree-Law No. 89/2013 of July 9, and also by Fundação para Ciência e Tecnologia, I.P.
