Summary: A research position for one Research Grant (“Bolsa de Investigação“) is opened at Instituto de Telecomunicações, in the scope of the Project UID/EEA/50008/2019, funded by the applicable financial framework (FCT/MCTES) (PIDDAC). The work for this position is in the area of Experimental Evaluation of the ITU-R Two-slope Propagation Model in Small Cell Networks Description: The research aims at validating analytical and simulation results for service quality and system capacity, by experimentally verifying the application of this propagation model, and similar ones (with slight variations in the assumptions) where direct path plus one reflected ray (on the ground) are assumed. Parameters like delay, packet loss ratio and throughput will be measured by using USRP B210 devices with OpenLTE-based implementation of the 4G system.

Admission Requirements: Master degree in electrical and computer engineering, or equivalent. The successful candidate has sound prerequisites in wireless communication systems at Master’s level and possesses strong wireless communications analytical, simulation and modelling skills. Mathematical skills on radio resource management, event-driven simulation and information theory are definitely an asset to the planned research, energy aspects involved in wireless/mobile communications, electronics design, as well as strong knowledge on C, C++, C# and Visual Studio.
Work Objectives: According to ITU-R, in 4G and beyond Small Cell Networks, at UHF/SHF bands, the propagation can be modelled by the urban micro Line-of-Sight (UMiLoS) two-slope propagation model. In order to verify analytical and simulation results for service quality and system capacity, this research will experimentally verify the application of this propagation model, and similar ones (with slight variations in the assumptions) where direct path plus one reflected ray (on the ground) are assumed. Parameters like delay, packet loss ratio and throughput will be measured, and the impact of the two-slope propagation characteristics before and beyond the breakpoint distance analysed. The sensibility to different characteristics of the environment, where reflections can also occur, e.g., on walls from the neighbouring buildings will be considered. As the hardware implementation is based on USRP B210 devices with OpenLTE-based implementation of the system, 2x2 MIMO will also be considered and performance results explored.

Place of work: The work will be developed at the premises of Instituto de Telecomunicações at Covilhã site (Universidade da Beira Interior), under the supervision of Professor Fernando José Velez.
Duration: 3 months, with the possibility of renewal. Start date: 01-10-2019 (or soon thereafter).
Monthly salary: 989,70 € (net), according to the table of grant amounts awarded directly by FCT for positions held in Portugal (www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores). The payment will be made by bank transfer.
