Title: Research Grant - BIL/Nº122 - 05/09/2017 - UID/EEA/50008/2013 - CRACKIT
Funding Reference Number: BIL/Nº122 - 05/09/2017 - UID/EEA/50008/2013 - CRACKIT
Summary: A research position for one Research Grant (“Bolsa de Investigação“) is opened at Instituto de Telecomunicações, in the scope of the Project CRACKIT Reference UID/EEA/50008/2013, funded by the applicable financial framework (FCT/MCTES) (PIDDAC). The work for this position is in the area of Automatic Road Crack Detection and Characterization.
Scientific Area: Networks and Multimedia
Group: Multimedia Signal Processing – Lx
Admission Requirements: Bachelor (Licenciatura) degree on electrical and computer engineering, computer science, or equivalent; background on multimedia signal processing, image and video analysis, computer vision, pattern recognition; knowledge of C/C++/Matlab programming, fluent in English with good skills in technical writing and presenting; self-motivation for scientific research; ability for teamwork.
Work Objectives: This research position focuses on the research and development of a system able to process images of the surface of flexible road pavements, to allow for the automatic detection and characterization of road surface defects. Although cracks with linear development are considered the most common pavement surface degradation found by road inspectors, other important surface defects like cracks with alligator pattern, potholes, routing, raveling, among others, represent important data about pavement surface condition to allow for an adequate quantitative and qualitative evaluation of road pavement surface degradation. Images of road surface taken using imaging systems composed of one regular camera (considered as been non-expensive imaging systems) have been used by researchers, mainly on the detection of cracks with linear development. This project exploits the usage of different setups of image sensors, notably cameras carried by a vehicle with its optical axis perpendicular in relation to the pavement surface, or those fixed at the top of the vehicles for acquisition of pavement surface in a slant range mode. The proposed work includes: (i) Preprocessing stage, for noise and artifact removal; (ii) development of feature extraction techniques to allow the detection of cracks and other road distresses; (iii) development of classification techniques to identify the relevant road degradations, including longitudinal, transversal and alligator pattern cracks; potholes; rutting and raveling; (iv) development of a friendly graphical user interface as a front-end to the developed analysis tools.
