Creating and sharing knowledge for telecommunications
Since we are in Christmas Season this Editorial could well be entitled a Christmas Gift. But, unlike any other Christmas gift, this one had its share of sweetness and sourness.

it took the renewal of its status of Associated Laboratory, AL, very seriously. After a careful discussion regarding whether it should accept the challenge of increasing the number of its researchers with an indefinite contract from the present 7 to 10% of the number of integrated researchers after 5 years (something around 20 researchers), we submitted the application by the end of October of 2020.

Contrary to what we expected from previous FCT evaluation processes, only one and a half months later, we were interviewed by the assessment panel and, by the end of February of 2021, we had already received the result of that evaluation.

At that time, we became convinced that the contract should immediately be signed since the AL program would encompass a five years' period starting from January 1st, 2021. Nevertheless, the first draft of the contract was only sent to us by the middle of May 2021, and its ready-to-sign version on August 18. But, contrary to what one could expect from an event in the middle of August, the process went to a halt up to October when FCT contacted us asking if we would agree with a change on the way the number of integrated researchers should be counted.

After reformulating the planned number of new contracts and the corresponding budget, we expected that FCT would finally sign the contract. But we were informed that FCT had to wait for a decision of the Government ("Resolução do Conselho de Ministros") necessary to provide it with the required funds to support the AL contracts. This decision was only made on December 10, to finally have the AL contract signed on December 20, just before Christmas.

So, we took it as a sweet Christmas Gift though resulting from a sour process.

 Season's Greetings Postcard 

Communications have never played such an important role in people's lives as they do now. The times ahead can only be one of optimism and hope, fundamental ingredients for IT to pursue its mission of creating and disseminating new knowledge in the R&D areas of Technologies of Information, Communications, and Electronics (TICE). May 2022 be a year of consecration of this journey. A journey that is only possible with a high-level research team, members, and employees. Thanks to all for this year and let's make 2022 a year with more and better science!

Sensors for IoT Devices with Scarce Resources

Ph.D.  in Electrical Engineering, by University of Aveiro, March 2021, supervised by Nuno Borges Carvalho (IT-Aveiro), Sérgio Ivan Lopes (IT-Aveiro) and Pedro Tavares Pinho (IT-Aveiro). His Ph.D. thesis is focused on the development of passive, semi-passive, and active solutions to respond to challenges related to energy efficiency and communication. In this sense, various topics such as backscatter communication, wireless energy transmission, energy harvesting, chipless sensors, simultaneous energy, and information transmission, and low-power and long-range communication were explored. Currently, he is a researcher at Almascience - beyond paper, Portugal.

Graça Brotas

I enrolled in IT in 2006, during my chemistry degree by the hand of Prof. Luís Alcácer, in a project for fabricating organic transistors. Then, I did the work in my Master's thesis and my Ph.D. in the synthesis and characterization of organic semiconductors, under the supervision of Prof. Jorge Morgado and Dr. Ana Charas at the Organic Electronics Group. In those years, I used many techniques in organic synthesis but also learned to build and characterize organic electronic devices (Light Emitting Diodes and Photovoltaic Cells). I am really thankful to everyone who worked by my side in the Organic Electronics Group because the years I spent there allowed me to grow, both as a person and as a scientist.

After I finished my Ph.D. in 2015, I worked at a frozen pastry factory as an R&D technician, working on small-scale tests of new ingredients for the production of frozen baked goods. From 2019 to 2021 I joined the Solid State Group at Centro de Ciências e Tecnologias Nucleares, characterizing organic semicrystalline semiconductors. There, I used techniques that included electrical resistivity measurements with temperature variations down to 1.4K and with applied fields up to 16T. It was a very exciting project to work on, and it also helped me diversify my skill set.

This year, I decided to go back to the industry, and seized an opportunity at a polyethene extrusion company, as an R&D technician. My work involves a fundamental science project, in which I am the link between the company and the University group working along with us. Also, I am involved in the analysis of recycled plastic products and their integration into new products. In this work, I can perfectly put to use the diverse set of skills I got from both the academic world and industry.
