Following the publication of the European Chips Act (ECA) on February 8, 2022, which came with a financial allocation of 43 billion Euros, the Portuguese Government unveiled the National Strategy for Semiconductors (NSS) on January 8, 2024, with a funding of 121 million Euros spanning 2024-2027.

While the primary aim of the ECA is to reclaim the scientific and industrial expertise that Europe once possessed in the field of semiconductors, the objective of the NSS is to foster the development of the semiconductors sector in Portugal, maximizing the participation of our country in the ECA. For that, the NSS outlines three key focus areas: (1) Promoting and consolidating the qualification of individuals in the fields of semiconductors and microelectronics; (2) Expanding the Portuguese ecosystem for semiconductor chips design and advanced packaging; and (3) Improving the transfer of technology to the industry in emerging semiconductor related fields.

It is noteworthy that each of these focus areas aligns perfectly with the mission of IT, whether as R&D-Unit/Associate Laboratory (R&D-Unit/LA), as Technology and Innovation Center (CTI), or both. Additionally, IT has several groups with a well-established tradition of internationally recognized research, development, and high-level training dedicated to semiconductor device modeling, signal integrity and package design, electronic design automation, RF and power electronics, emerging semiconductor technologies such as GaAs, GaN and SiGe technologies, as well as integrated and quantum photonics. Therefore, the two referred legal instruments present an invaluable opportunity that we cannot afford to waste. On the contrary, participating in the European Chips Act at both the national and European levels is a responsibility that IT cannot decline.

Physical Layer Security for Wireless Networks with Help of Jamming

PhD in Electrotechnical Engineering by the University of Aveiro, March 2022, supervised by Daniel Castanheira (IT) and Adão Silva (IT/UA).

This thesis develops security mechanisms to improve the confidentiality of wireless networks using physical layer security. The latter defines a concept of secrecy that fundamentally exploits the physical properties of the communication medium to guarantee secrecy between multiple communication parties. 

 


Pedro Filipe 
Computability of logical problems associated with partial non-deterministic matrices

Ph.D. in Mathematics by Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, November 2022, supervised by Carlos Caleiro and Sérgio Marcelino (both from IT/IST).

The thesis explores various algebraic constructions that take advantage of the extra expressivity provided by partial non-deterministic matrices to manipulate multiple aspects of the induced logics.

Leonice Pereira
A process model for quality in use evaluation on clinical decision support systems (CDSS)

Ph.D. in Computer Science Engineering by University of Beira Interior (March 2022), supervised by Nuno Gonçalo Coelho Costa Pombo, from IT/UBI.

This study offers dual contributions: a comprehensive analysis of software quality and the proposal of a process model guiding the collection and measurement of Quality in Use (QiU) characteristics, aligning with ISO/IEC 25000 standards. 

Leonice is an information and communication technology (ICT) analyst, at the Federal Institute of Triângulo Mineiro - Campus Uberlândia Centro, in Brazil.

Ana Mestre

I began as a Research fellow at IT in 2018. After 2019 I pursued a Ph.D. in Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering. My thesis titled “Ultra-sensitive Bioelectronic Transducers to Monitor Electrical Activity in Cell Populations” was done under the guidance of Henrique Gomes and co-supervised by Deborah Power.

My research at IT led to the development of a pioneering electrophysiological device capable of discerning and quantifying the unique electrical signatures of cancer cells. Its innovative capabilities extend to enabling precise assessments of cancer cell migratory behavior and serve as a powerful tool in drug screening.

Currently, I am employed in a Medical Devices Company in Lisboa. I am in touch with the most advanced technology for medical treatments. I’m responsible for the strategic sales plans, promoting and selling medical products to healthcare professionals and institutions. 

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Instituto de Telecomunicações for providing an environment conducive to learning and innovation. The knowledge and experiences gained here continue to be invaluable in shaping my career trajectory.
