Instituto de Telecomunicações researcher takes the lead of Portugal’s leading scientific society in Optics and Photonics

On 9 July, during the General Assembly of the Portuguese Society for Optics and Photonics (SPOF), Rogério Nogueira, researcher at Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT), was elected President of the Society for the upcoming term, succeeding Manuel Filipe Costa.

SPOF is the leading Portuguese scientific society dedicated to promoting Optics and Photonics, bringing together researchers, academics, and students in the field and representing the Portuguese community within major international scientific organisations.

This election continues Rogério Nogueira's longstanding involvement with the Society. As one of its founding members in 2011, he has served as Vice-President since its creation, contributing to the development and international recognition of Portugal’s Optics and Photonics community.

During his new term, he aims to strengthen connections between research, industry, and society, promote the internationalisation of the Portuguese Optics and Photonics community, and encourage Portugal’s more active participation in European and international initiatives.

This new role complements his position as Vice-President of the International Commission for Optics (ICO), to which he was elected in 2024. His involvement in both organisations further strengthens the international representation and visibility of the Portuguese Optics and Photonics community.

The election also highlights the important role of Instituto de Telecomunicações in research and innovation in Optics and Photonics, as well as the growing presence of its researchers in leadership positions within national and international scientific organisations.
