Fernando Pereira, Senior Researcher at the Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT) and Full Professor of the Instituto Superior Técnico, received the title of “Técnico’s Distinguished Professor”.
This prestigious title, awarded annually by Técnico to a maximum of two faculty members, recognizes professors and researchers whose exceptional contributions have had a profound impact on the institution’s academic, scientific, and educational mission, while demonstrating leadership and excellence in line with the highest international standards.
Fernando Pereira, together with Professor Leonel Sousa (INESC), received this important institutional distinction on May 22 in recognition of their outstanding academic and scientific achievements.
A globally recognized expert in multimedia signal processing and communication, Fernando Pereira has built a remarkable scientific career with pioneering contributions to the analysis, processing, coding, description, adaptation, and summarization of multimedia information. His research spans several visual modalities, including image, video, point clouds, light fields, and event-based data.
He received his PhD from Instituto Superior Técnico in 1991 following a collaboration with Centro Studi e Laboratori Telecomunicazioni in Turin, Italy. His doctoral thesis received the first edition of the IBM Scientific Award. At IT, he founded the Multimedia Signal Processing Group, helping position the institution as an international reference in multimedia technologies and signal processing research.
Throughout his career, he played a pioneering leadership role in international multimedia standardization, particularly within the MPEG and JPEG frameworks, which transformed the global access and consumption of digital media content.
Professor Pereira is Fellow of the IEEE since 2008, a Fellow of EURASIP since 2013, and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology since 2015. He has also served as Vice-President of the IEEE Signal Processing Society and Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Signal Processing, while contributing to the editorial boards of several leading scientific journals.
His academic leadership and service have been internationally recognized through several prestigious distinctions, including the IEEE Signal Processing Society Leo L. Beranek Meritorious Service Award and the EURASIP Meritorious Service Award, both awarded in 2023. Beyond his internationally acclaimed research contributions, Fernando Pereira has been repeatedly recognized as an Excellent Professor by students.
IT warmly congratulates Fernando Pereira on this highly prestigious distinction, recognizing a career that continues to elevate Portuguese science, engineering, and innovation on the global stage.
