As Artificial Intelligence continues to gain prominence in everyday life, questions about its impact on society are becoming increasingly important. As with previous technological revolutions, concerns about its consequences - for our personal lives, the job market, and the future of human relationships - have fuelled a debate that extends far beyond technology, touching on ethical, social, and philosophical issues.
In this context, our researcher Mário Figueiredo participated in SIC’s Expresso da Meia-Noite to share his perspective on the challenges and opportunities posed by Artificial Intelligence.
During the discussion, Mário Figueiredo highlighted that throughout history, every major technological innovation has generated both expectations and concerns. Artificial Intelligence represents another step in this ongoing evolution and should be examined critically and responsibly, particularly in light of the ethical questions it raises and the potential benefits and risks associated with its use. The exploitation chains involving disadvantaged people are one of the aspects we often overlook," he notes, referring to the exploitation of workers involved in this sector.
The debate has recently gained renewed public attention following the publication of Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical Magnifica Humanitas, which brought to the forefront issues that have long been discussed within academic circles. Fundamental questions such as “Where are we now?”, “Where are we heading?”, and “What is truly at stake?” have taken on new urgency at a time when technological progress is advancing at an unprecedented pace.
