Aveiro Technological Free Zone (Zona Livre Tecnológica - ZLT Aveiro) has been officially approved in "Diário da República". The proposal, led by a consortium comprising the University of Aveiro and the Municipalities of Aveiro and Ílhavo, also includes Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT), PCI - Creative Science Park Aveiro Region, TICE.PT, and the Administration of the Port of Aveiro.

ZLT Aveiro will be a real-world testing ground for innovative technologies, closely integrated with the “Aveiro Tech City Living Lab”. Key areas of focus include 5G and IoT networks, autonomous vehicles, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and next-generation connectivity solutions. This initiative will further solidify the region’s status as a hub of technological innovation.

The “Aveiro Tech City Living Lab” is a milestone of the “Aveiro STEAM City” project, led by our researcher Susana Sargento. It positions Aveiro as a living tester in smart and sustainable urban solutions. Spanning terrestrial, estuarine, and maritime environments, the infrastructure fosters the development of disruptive technologies while bridging research, industry, and public administration.

IT will oversee the technological management of the communication and sensing network, which consists of 44 antennas and 16 km of optical fiber in the Municipality of Aveiro. IT will also coordinate communication protocols, including vehicular communications (RSUs, OBUs, and more), and manage mobility data from radar sensors and cameras. Additionally, the infrastructure will extend to Ílhavo and the Port of Aveiro.

Beyond infrastructure management, IT will provide technological guidance and mentorship to entities conducting tests within ZLT, fostering innovation and enhancing the region’s competitiveness.
