Pedro Fonseca, our researcher and professor at the University of Aveiro, has been honored with the prestigious “IEEE Distinguished Chapter Leadership Award”. This award recognizes Society members who have made exceptional and sustained contributions to their local chapters. According to IEEE, the award is presented to “a Society member who has, over a sustained period of time, made an exceptional contribution to the Society, which manifested itself in a local Chapter.”

This annual distinction highlights the work of individuals leading national chapters of the IEEE Education Society. In Pedro Fonseca's case, the award acknowledges his “outstanding sustained effort in enhancing engineering education by developing and involving the Portuguese Chapter of the IEEE Education Society members in invaluable chapter activities.”

Reflecting on this achievement, Pedro Fonseca shared, “This award culminates the results of my work over six years (from 2018 to 2023) as Chair of the Portuguese Chapter of the IEEE Education Society. During this time, including the challenging pandemic years, I collaborated with my colleagues on the Chapter Council, João Nuno Matos (also from IT Aveiro) and Vítor Grade Tavares, to organize activities that have now been recognized by the IEEE Education Society.”

With his term as Chair concluding due to term limits, Pedro Fonseca will transition to new leadership roles. He will serve as Vice-Chair of the Portuguese Section and as the "Liaison Officer" to the Climate Change Committee of IEEE Region 8.
