The IT team showcased cutting-edge technology at ARmy Technological EXperimentation (ARTEX 24), held from June 17th to July 5th at Campo Militar Santa Margarida.

This event was organized by the Portuguese Army and conducted by the Centro de Experimentação e Modernização Tecnológica do Exército (CEMTEx). The Minister of National Defense and the Secretary of State for National Defense were in attendance.

The primary objective of ARTEX 24 was to identify solutions to bridge gaps in the land force’s capabilities and advance the Army’s modernization efforts.

The IT team, from the Networks Architectures and Protocols group, in collaboration with CapGemini, presented an innovative, on-demand, UAV-based open-source 5G network. This proof-of-concept uses Wi-Fi and satellite backhauling to provide internet connectivity and voice services through a 5G network extended by UAVs, specifically designed for use in disaster scenarios and remote areas. The service targets both first responders and individuals in need, leveraging any remaining smart city infrastructure or being deployed independently in remote locations.

Pedro Valente, in the photo, and Daniel Pôças were present at the event showcasing the system developed. The full team behind the project was José Oliveira, Miguel Luís, Duarte Raposo, Pedro Rito, Susana Sargento, and Afonso Teixeira.
