Researchers Sandra Correia, Paulo André, and doctoral student Gonçalo Figueiredo are contributing to a groundbreaking project led by Rute Ferreira, professor at the University of Aveiro's Department of Physics and CICECO. This innovative project aims to create a window that not only generates energy but also transmits data via WiFi. One potential application includes the use of elastic films with embedded optical centers to extend satellite lifespans.

“These films can be directly applied to photovoltaic cells, enhancing their efficiency, especially in space where ultraviolet radiation is more prevalent,” explains Sandra Correia.

"The technology involves a normal glass pane coated with a film that absorbs ultraviolet and blue solar radiation, converting it into green and red light. This converted light is then directed to the edges of the glass where photovoltaic cells harness it to generate electricity," as detailed by project lead Rute Ferreira.

"We believe that in the future, most cities will be buildings covered in glass and we could use all this glass to harness energy, estimate temperature and perhaps optical communications", adds Gonçalo Figueiredo, PhD student at the University of Aveiro.

Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT) contributes to the telecommunications aspects of the prototype, including developing an app for real-time temperature monitoring. Paulo André and Gonçalo Figueiredo are key players in this part of the project. Sandra Correia's research on luminescent solar concentrators during her doctorate has also been integral to the development of this energy-generating window, adding new dimensions and functionalities to the concept.
