Living up to past editions, this participation of IT in Ciência Viva no Laboratório is no exception, namely with four internships in the Biomedical, Telecommunications, and Electronics & 5G themes.
These internships have highlighted the interest and, consequently, the success of these subjects among the students. This is proved by the testimonial of Inês Godinho, the next candidate for IT's research group on biosignals, now in the first year of her degree at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST). We asked Inês how it was, and how her participation in the 2021 edition of INBIO influenced her decision to become a biomedical engineer.
Introduction to Telecommunications (INTELE) - To be held from the 3rd to the 7th of July with a limit of 20 participants.
These internships are intended to introduce telecommunications (with a duration of 6 hours/5 Days). Mornings are dedicated to group presentations, laboratory visits, and experimental sessions. In the afternoons, the interns will assemble “kits” of FM radio broadcasting receivers, visit the Faraday Museum and enter an anechoic chamber. The trainees will have contact with printed circuit manufacturing and testing techniques, solder the components of the “kits” and test the circuits at the end.
Introduction to Biosignals (INBIO 1 and 2) - To be held from the 10th to the 14th of July with a limit of 6 participants per internship
This internship intends to make an introduction to biosignals, biomedical instrumentation, and telecommunications. It corresponds to 30 hours (3 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon for 5 days). Mornings are dedicated to group presentations, laboratory visits, and experimental sessions. In the afternoons, the interns will dedicate themselves to assembling “kits” for the acquisition of biosignals and experiencing biomedical sensors firsthand. The trainees will have contact with the manufacturing and testing techniques of printed circuits, solder the components of the “kits”, manufacture some of the components to be used and test the circuits at the end. The group presentation program will encompass an introduction to biomedical engineering, systems physiology, signals and systems, fundamentals of biomedical instrumentation, artificial intelligence, network and Internet communications, mobile communications, video coding and analysis, and wireless power transmission.
Introduction to electronics and 5G communications – To be held from the 3rd to the 7th of July
This internship addresses the basics of electronics and mobile and wireless telecommunications. It corresponds to 30 hours (3 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon, for 5 days). It will allow students to get in touch with some of the innovative applications of electronics and communication networks, through immersion in the context of research and development at the Instituto de Telecomunicações and carrying out visits and experiences. It will include conceptual sessions, laboratory work with the assembly of electronics "kits", basic techniques for the production of printed circuits, experimental measurements of received power, bit rate, and other relevant quantities in 5G mobile systems. Interns will have contact with the assembly of simple point-to-multi-point connections and the experimental verification of performance, as well as with the main research and technological challenges for the development of mobile and wireless communications in the 21st century (for example, cells small terrestrial and aerial drone-based, Open RAN and splitting, spatial processing, and massive MIMO functionalities).
