Augmanity project, led by Jonathan Gonzalez and Joaquim Bastos, from the “Mobile Systems” research group of IT at the University of Aveiro, presented the first results, which consisted of the implementation of 5G technology in the Portuguese industry to improve HR conditions, starting with Bosch, which is the leader of the consortium of this project.
Augmanity, or Augmented Humanity, aims to develop relevant technologies that make industrial workplaces more attractive, healthy, and more ergonomic in the future, for example by providing smart and interactive devices. The objective is to contribute to the creation of an environment conducive to the development of activities, namely by reducing monotony, increasing motivation, through the use, for example, of artificial vision, and optimizing internal logistical traffic. The expectation is that this technology will allow the workforce to be prepared for the new paradigm of digitization, for example, augmented and mixed realization can help improve the way human resources operate and solve problems. Among other solutions, the project proposes to develop systems integration strategies of cyber-physical systems and ultra-connectivity in the industrial value chain, with IoT and 5G technology to connect networks of sensors and equipment in assembly lines. The focus is also on preserving energy efficiency, contributing to the paradigm of green and smart industries.
IT team participates in PPS3 – Industrial Internet of Things and Connectivity, contributing to the field of cybersecurity, developing, and proposing an intrusion detection system (IDS) for the IoT network including nodes with 5G connectivity, as well as mechanisms for the preservation of privacy.
So far, the Augmanity project has executed around 6 million euros of the planned total (8.2 million euros), with the participation of over 300 participants and 200 researchers.
This project is financed by Portugal 2020 under the POCI and by the ERDF (European Regional Development Fund), has a duration of three years, and has a completion date scheduled for June 2023.
