Gonçalo Correia, a former doctoral candidate at the Instituto de Telecomunicações, currently Guest Professor at Técnico, won the "Vencer o Adamastor" Award.

Gonçalo Correia's research aims to reduce the size of artificial intelligence (AI) networks and, consequently, a reduction in the ecological footprint and gain in efficiency. The work developed by the researcher has applications in machine translation.

The Adamastor Prize aims to distinguish projects developed in the area of electronics, computing, and information and communication technology.

Gonçalo Correia completed his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2022, with the thesis "Learnable Sparsity and Weak Supervision for Data-Efficient, Transparent, and Compact Neural Models", under the guidance of Professor André Martins (IT).

In a partnership between INESC and the newspaper Público, the "Vencer o Adamastor" Prize aims to recognize and give visibility to works of exceptional quality by young Portuguese scientists, or those residing in Portugal for at least three years, that demonstrate scientific excellence, vision and capacity of leadership.

The prize, worth €20,000, distinguishes innovative works in the fields of electrotechnics, computing, and related fields, which reveal potential for developments that benefit society.

The delivery of the "Vencer o Adamastor" Prize, promoted by INESC and PÚBLICO, will take place on February 1st, at Técnico.

The award ceremony will be attended by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
