Last week, the Government announced the members of its new advisory body — the National Council for Science, Technology and Innovation (CNCTI) — and among them is João Barros, Founding Director of IT’s branch in Porto and Founder and CEO of Veniam, a spin-off company of IT and the Universities of Porto and Aveiro.

CNCTI’s first plenary meeting took place on March 1, with the presidents of Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), Agência Nacional de Inovação (ANI) and Agência para a Competitividade e Inovação (IAPMEI), as well as 20 renowned individuals in different fields of knowledge and economics, including academic, scientific and business leaders from diverse institutional and regional backgrounds.

The CNCTI was created in February 2021 in order to develop, reinforce and support the National Scientific and Technological System, ensuring scientific advice and fostering cross-cutting and inter-ministerial dialogue on science policies, technology and innovation.

This new advisory body will work in close liaison with the Minister of State for the Economy and Digital Transition, Pedro Siza Vieira, and the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor. It will also collaborate, upon request of the Assembly of the Republic, in parliamentary debates on science, technology and innovation.
