by IT on 13-11-2019
The Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) has been distinguished with an Engineering Emmy by the US Academy of Television Arts & Sciences at the 71st Engineering Emmy Awards, held in JW Marriott Hotel, Los Angeles, USA, last October 23.

An example of cutting-edge innovation, the JPEG standard has remained one of the leading still-image formats for 27 years, enabling the world to use and share billions of images every day. JPEG is a joint working group of the International Standardization Organization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). More specifically, the JPEG committee is Working Group 1 (WG1), Coding of Still Pictures, of JTC 1’s subcommittee 29 (SC29), Coding of Audio, Picture, Multimedia and Hypermedia Information.

Portugal, and more specifically IT, has a significant weight in the JPEG's leadership, with two of its researchers being among the eight JPEG Subgroup Chairs. Only the US have an equal weight in the JPEG leadership. Fernando Pereira, from IT in Lisbon, is the Chair of the JPEG Requirements Subgroup, and António Pinheiro, from IT in Covilhã, is the Chair of the JPEG Communication Subgroup. Moreover, IT is leading one of the most recent and exciting activities in the field, that is image coding based on deep learning techniques.
