Mário Figueiredo, from IT, has just won this year´s IAPR Pierre Devijver Award. This award, implemented by the IAPR to commemorate Pierre Devijver, one of the founders of statistical pattern recognition, is granted each year to an outstanding scientist who has contributed significantly to the field of statistical pattern recognition.
Mário Figueiredo declared us he felt very honoured, stating that “The award means a recognition by our peers of the work that me, my collaborators and my students, have made along the years in the fields of pattern recognition and machine learning”. Also, the IT researcher believes that “this award, as any other international award, contributes to the visibility and prestige of Portuguese research in general, and of the University of Lisbon, Instituto Superior Técnico, and Instituto de Telecomunicações in particular."
The award lecture will be delivered at this year´s S+SSPR 2016 – IAPR International Workshops on Structural and Syntactic Pattern Recognition and Statistical Techniques in Pattern Recognition – which will be held in Merida, Mexico, from November 30 to December 2.
This distinction comes after Mário Figueiredo had already won this year´s EURASIP Individual Technical Achievement Award and after having his name featured on the Thomson Reuters´ Highly Cited Researchers list for the third consecutive time.
