Instituto de Telecomunicações Researchers Take on Leadership Roles in IEEE EMBS Portugal

The IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Portuguese Chapter (IEEE EMBS PT Chapter) has announced its newly elected leadership for the 2026-2027 biennium, marking the beginning of its 20th anniversary celebrations. This milestone comes at a time of significant growth in Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, and Biological Engineering in Portugal.

The new leadership team aims to strengthen the Chapter’s role in fostering international collaboration and supporting the professional development of its members, while continuing to expand its impact within the scientific and technological community.

The Executive Board is composed of distinguished professionals and emerging researchers:

  • Hugo Plácido da Silva (Chair), Senior Researcher at the Instituto de Telecomunicações and Invited Professor at the Instituto Superior Técnico, recognized for his entrepreneurial contributions to biomedical engineering.
  • Maria de Fátima Domingues (Vice-Chair), Professor at Khalifa University and IT researcher.
  • Patrícia Bota (Treasurer), Chief Technology Officer at Hibiscus Health and former IT PhD student.
  • Letícia Sousa (Secretary), Master’s student and early-stage PhD researcher at Instituto Superior Técnico.

For the 2026-2027 mandate, the newly elected officers have outlined a vision focused on consolidating and expanding the Chapter’s influence. Their mission is to continue advancing engineering applications in biology and medicine, promoting innovation, scientific excellence, and meaningful societal impact.

As the IEEE EMBS PT Chapter enters its third decade, it reaffirms its commitment to supporting the next generation of engineers and researchers while strengthening Portugal’s position in the global bioengineering landscape.
