A research team from Instituto de Telecomunicações and the Polytechnic of Leiria has developed an innovative system to support the early diagnosis of skin cancer, particularly melanoma.

The project PlenoISLA combines advanced imaging technology with artificial intelligence to analyse skin lesions in both two and three dimensions. Using specialised cameras with light field technology, the system captures detailed images that allow for deeper analysis beyond traditional methods.

By processing this data through machine learning algorithms, the system can quickly classify lesions as benign or malignant, improving both the speed and accuracy of diagnosis. Researchers highlight that early detection is critical, as melanoma remains one of the most aggressive forms of skin cancer but is highly treatable when identified in its initial stages.

The initiative was developed in collaboration with dermatology specialists from the Centro Hospitalar de Leiria, contributing to the creation of the world’s first public dataset of 3D skin lesion images.

The results are expected to support healthcare professionals, enhance diagnostic reliability, and open new possibilities for research in medical imaging and artificial intelligence.
